Chevy Chase, Maryland – Montgomery County Police have recently made a significant breakthrough in a decades-old rape case, leading to the arrest of Xavier Battice. Authorities are urging any additional victims to come forward and provide information that could assist in the investigation.

The Montgomery County Police Department’s Major Crime Cold Case Unit announced on Tuesday that they have arrested 62-year-old Xavier Battice in connection with a rape that occurred on September 24, 1992. The incident took place in the 5400 block of Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase.

According to police reports, a woman disembarked from a bus in Chevy Chase when she noticed a man following her. The man, later identified as Xavier Battice, then coerced her to a nearby park where he allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene.

Due to the diligent efforts of the cold case detectives, evidence from the crime scene was submitted to the crime laboratory. Through DNA analysis, a DNA profile was extracted and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). The DNA profile was subsequently matched to Xavier Battice.

Based on the DNA match, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Battice. He is being charged with two counts of second-degree rape and one count of second-degree sexual assault. Currently residing in Morgan Hill, California, Battice was arrested by local authorities there once they were informed about the Montgomery County investigation. He was then held in a detention center in California until he was extradited to Maryland.

On December 15, Battice was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing facility, where he is currently being held without bond.

Detectives are concerned that there may be additional victims of sexual assault by Battice who have not yet come forward. They are urging anyone with more information or who may have been a victim of Battice to contact the police at 1-866-411-8477.

In recent years, there have been several breakthroughs in cold case investigations.
