The caller reported being approached by a woman holding a gun near the driveway exit of the North Boulder Recreation Center. Responding swiftly, the police arrived at the scene at 4:12 p.m., locating the woman near the center just two minutes later.
According to Boulder police Support Services Deputy Chief Ron Gosage, the woman did not cooperate with the officers and attempted to flee north on Broadway on foot. During the pursuit, she was seen withdrawing what appeared to be a firearm from her purse. In their efforts to de-escalate the situation, the police employed less lethal force, but unfortunately, it proved ineffective.
After several unsuccessful attempts at de-escalation, the police made the difficult decision to open fire at 4:26 p.m. Medical assistance was immediately provided by the officers while waiting for a Boulder Fire-Rescue crew to arrive. Despite approximately 40 minutes of emergency aid, Jeanette Alatorre succumbed to her injuries.
Prior Incidents and Investigation
Deputy Chief Ron Gosage revealed that the woman was the subject of a trespassing call earlier that day at the recreation center. Allegedly, she had refused to leave a bathroom, prompting police intervention. However, during the earlier incident, there was no indication of her possessing a firearm.
