The Euclid Police Department have declared a manhunt to capture Deshawn Vaughn for the murder of a police officer.
Vaughn shot and killed Officer Jacob Derbin while responding to a dispatch call.
Amidst a strong manhunt from authorities to capture him, Vaughn was found dead on Sunday afternoon at a home in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Officer Derbin, who had been on the force for a year, got engaged in May 2023. His wedding day was scheduled for July 27, 2024.
According to a release from Euclid Police, officers were called to the 300 block of East 211th Street for the disturbance just before 9 p.m. Saturday.
While investigating, the suspect ambushed an officer and shot him.
The officer was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office identified the officer as Jacob Derbin, who was within the first year with the department.
“The promise to protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.
“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.”
A statewide Ohio Blue Alert was activated for Vaughn prior to being found dead.
The suspect had a lengthy criminal history.
A jury in the Lake County Court of Common Pleas found Vaughn guilty of second-degree felonious assault in July of 2017. Vaughn received a four-year prison sentence following the conviction, with a credit of 270 days of time served.
Vaughn also pleaded guilty in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas to reduced charges of receiving stolen property and having weapons under disability in October of 2021. The judge sentenced Vaughn to 263 days in prison following the conviction.
Euclid PD says Vaughn is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighs 215 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.
Vaughn was last seen in a white Volkswagen Passat with Ohio license plate No. R947155. EPD says he is considered armed and ‘extremely dangerous’.
