The South African radio industry is mourning the loss of a significant figure, Mthobeli August, better known as KCI. The radio personality who had a significant following owing to his outspoken nature and humorous delivery on Umhlobo Wenene FM, a Xhosa broadcasting station, died by suicide on December 29, 2023.
Mthobeli August’s life and career were marked by highs and lows. His journey was punctuated by various scandals and controversies, making him a contentious figure in the public eye. It has been reported that August had been grappling with depression and financial difficulties for an extended period.
His professional life took a hit when he was dismissed from his role at Umhlobo Wenene FM in December 2023 for failing to attend a wedding event he had committed to directing. However, this wasn’t the first time August faced expulsion from the radio station. In 2010, he was terminated over allegations of assaulting a female coworker, only to be reinstated in 2016 following a protracted legal struggle.
Shortly before his death, August posted a vague message on his Facebook page stating, “If I had to die right now, I’d die a happy man.” This statement echoed an interview he gave in 2016 to Drum magazine after being reinstated at Umhlobo Wenene FM. The same day, he was found dead in his Johannesburg residence, with a gunshot wound to his head. Authorities concluded it was a suicide, finding a note at the scene.
A public figure with a multi-faceted career, August was more than just a radio presenter. His talents extended to music, acting, comedy, and he was a Master of Ceremonies. Many in the industry saw him as a mentor. His musical endeavours included releasing gospel and house music albums, and he featured in movies and TV shows such as Intersexions, Zabalaza, and Isidingo.
Despite his professional accomplishments, August’s personal life was fraught with challenges. He was twice married, and both marriages ended amid allegations of infidelity and abusive behaviour. He was also embroiled in multiple paternity disputes.
The funeral service for Mthobeli August will be held on January 5, 2024, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. His passing is a loss to his family, friends, colleagues, and fans, who will remember him for his influential voice on the airwaves and his unique humour, which brought smiles to the faces of millions of South Africans.
