Sophia Lekiachvili Obituary: Lakeside High School student killed, 2 others injured in single-car accident along Oak Grove Road
After students and staff learnt of the tragic death of 17-year-old Sophie Lekiachvili in a devastating single-vehicle car accident over the weekend, a gloomy cloud descended across Lakeside High School this week.
Sophie was riding in a car with two other Lakeside students a little after midnight on Saturday when the vehicle crashed along Oak Grove Road near Kirkland Drive. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by local authorities. Tragically, Sophie sustained fatal injuries and passed away at Grady Memorial Hospital later that morning surrounded by her grief-stricken family.
As word of Sophie’s death spread throughout the tight-knit Lakeside community, students, teachers, and families alike struggled to make sense of this profound loss. Though just a junior, Sophie had already made an indelible impact on those lucky enough to know her. She was an honors student, a devoted member of the debate team, and a talented soccer player. But more importantly, Sophie was a selfless and compassionate spirit who uplifted those around her with encouragement and laughter. In the words of her debate coach Mr. Graham, “Sophie lit up every room she walked into with her warmth, quick wit, and passion for life.”
On Monday afternoon, a sea of Sophie’s heartbroken peers gathered near the site of the accident to grieve and pay tribute to their fallen classmate. As blue and white balloons drifted into the gray sky, students held one another through tears, left written messages, and placed bouquets of flowers near the roadside in Sophie’s memory.
