Shawn Calvey tragically passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, as announced by Cleveland Fire Fighters IAFF Local 93. According to reports, Shawn succumbed to a long battle with cancer, leaving his family, friends, and loved ones heartbroken by the loss.
Shawn served the Near West Side of Cleveland as a firefighter with the Cleveland Fire Department for eight years, primarily at Station 23. His unwavering work ethic, sharp instincts, extraordinary strength, and wonderful sense of humor earned him the respect and admiration of his peers. Shawn dedicated himself to the people of Cleveland, demonstrating courage and perseverance in numerous life-saving situations. He was a real-life superhero, embodying the qualities of an exceptional Cleveland firefighter.
While Shawn was a pleasure to work with, his true calling was being a family man. He was an incredible father to his two young daughters, Madeline, 3, and Landon, 6, and a devoted husband to his wife, Kelly. Shawn was also a dedicated friend, coach, uncle, cousin, brother, and son, leaving an indelible impact on all who knew him.
The State of Ohio will recognize Firefighter Calvey as an active Line of Duty Death, and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) will present the IAFF Medal of Honor to Shawn’s family this week in recognition of his service and sacrifice. Shawn will be honored on the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Colorado Springs, CO.
