The incident unfolded when officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center in 4S Ranch on December 7, at approximately 11:30 p.m. The victim had reported her car stolen and believed that the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Curtis Harris, was driving it. Harris was also known to have an unserved Emergency Protection Order against him due to a prior domestic violence incident.
Upon locating the stolen vehicle, officers discovered a woman sleeping in the passenger seat. They then entered a store to search for Harris. The bodycam footage reveals that when officers approached Harris, he made a run for it, drawing his gun and shooting San Diego Police Sergeant Anthony Elliott point blank in the head. Harris then proceeded to shoot at other officers, prompting them to fire back in self-defense. Harris sustained multiple gunshot wounds and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The video footage captured the moment officers found Sgt. Elliott with a gunshot wound to the head in the shopping cart corral. Immediate medical aid was provided to the sergeant until paramedics arrived. Despite being in critical condition, Sgt. Elliott showed signs of consciousness and was able to speak while being transported to the hospital. As of the latest update, he is in stable condition and continues to receive treatment.

The campaign has already raised $32,914 out of its $50,000 goal. Sgt. Elliott, who has been with the San Diego Police Department for six years, is receiving treatment at the hospital.
The other officers involved in the incident have been identified as Officer Tanarat Crowe, who has one year of service, Officer Darrion Talalele, with ten months of service, and Officer Trevor Wright, who has served for one and a half years. All three officers work in the Northwestern Division.
