The community of Columbia is mourning the loss of retired real estate magnate Sam Bornhauser. Born and raised in Columbia, Sam’s passing has left family and friends devastated, as the news reverberated through social media channels.
The confirmation came through a heartfelt Facebook post that read, “Yesterday I lost another cousin, Sam Bornhauser. Sam used to always say to me, ‘I know I’m your favorite cousin.’ I would say, ‘Yes, you are, you always have been.’” While the cause of his death remains undisclosed, the impact of his departure is keenly felt by those who knew him well.
Sam Bornhauser’s professional journey was remarkable. After a prosperous 15-year career in hospital software development and administration, he ventured into the real estate market in 1986. Over the next fifteen years, his dedication propelled him into leadership roles, culminating in the ownership of a successful real estate agency in Columbia.
A true son of Columbia, having attended Hickman High School and the University of Missouri, Sam witnessed the city’s transformation from a quaint college town to the bustling metropolis it is today. Beyond his business endeavors, he made significant contributions to the community by mentoring young athletes in football, basketball, and baseball. Sam was also a founding member and past president of the Hickman Touchdown Club, earning recognition as the Jaycee of the Year.
In 2009, Sam tied the knot with Karen ‘Kemper’ Wingert, who survives him. His legacy lives on through his son, Sam Winn Bornhauser, Jr., and stepchildren Jason Wingert and Jenifer Wingert. Sam is also survived by nine grandchildren, four sisters, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private family service will honor Sam Bornhauser’s memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Shiner’s Hospital for Children, in honor of Sam Bornhauser.
