During the inquest into the death of Anna Mansfield, daughter of renowned human rights lawyer Michael Mansfield, it was revealed that she took her own life shortly after disclosing concerns about endangering her team to her supervisors at telecommunications company Arqiva.
Anna, aged 44, died by suicide within 48 hours of a meeting with her supervisor, where they discussed matters of redundancy and resignation. In a prior meeting, Anna had confessed to taking an action that she believed put her team at risk. Her father expressed that she felt a sense of betrayal towards her employer and believed she had failed her children.
Michael Mansfield, known for his work on high-profile cases including the Birmingham Six and Jill Dando’s murder, attended a pre-inquest review hearing at North London Coroner’s Court. He stated that Anna felt responsible for divulging information that would lead to her termination, which added to her distress, exacerbated by economic austerity measures. Anna had received a redundancy notice.
Anna’s supervisor, Lowri Davies, expressed surprise at Anna’s concerns, noting no visible signs of distress during their meetings. Despite Anna’s calm demeanor in their final encounter, where she mentioned needing time to consider her options, Davies expected her to be more enthusiastic about potential opportunities, given her unemployment status.
