The Tavares Police Department has disclosed the identity of the individual who lost his life on U.S. Highway 441 during Friday night’s incident.

As per both witnesses and the initial inquiry by TPD, Renald Guay, a 67-year-old from New Hampshire, was reportedly standing in the median of U.S. Highway 441, commonly known as Burleigh Boulevard near Lake Eustis Drive, around 8 p.m. Eyewitnesses noted his attempt to cross the highway outside designated areas, as stated by TPD Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan.

Guay was struck by a white 2014 Lincoln SUV traveling in a southbound lane, driven by Merle Somers, aged 50 and a resident of Tavares. Fortunately, neither Somers nor her accompanying passenger sustained any injuries in the collision. Sullivan communicated to Inside Lake that the occupants of the vehicle cooperated with the investigating authorities and remained present at the scene.

Following the collision, Guay was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where regrettably, he succumbed to his injuries. The aftermath of the crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 441/Burleigh Boulevard for an extended period.
