A severe storm that swept through Mid-Missouri on Tuesday claimed a life in Audrain County. Mike Aherns, a devoted crop farmer, was tragically killed when a wooden electric pole fell on him at his family-owned farm, according to his brother, Ashley Aherns, who shared the heartbreaking news with ABC 17 News on Wednesday. The Aherns family has a long and rich history of farming in the area, dating back to the 1940s.
Mike Aherns was deeply committed to this legacy, dedicating his life to cultivating corn, soybeans, and wheat. Farming was more than just a job for Mike; it was a way of life that he embraced with passion and dedication. His brother, Ashley, fondly remembered Mike’s unwavering work ethic and love for the land. On the day of the storm, Mike was operating the family’s Oliver 77 tractor, a cherished piece of equipment that had been with the family since 1952. Tragically, while driving the tractor, a wooden electric pole fell and struck Mike, resulting in his untimely death.

Funeral Services will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg with Deacon Ron Deimeke officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park in Mexico. Visitation is Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church.
