John Aukstolis, a chef instructor in Johnson & Wales University’s College of Food Innovation & Technology has passed away. According to the Richard Wiscott, Ph.D., John was a faculty member at Johnson & Wales for nearly 30 years. Many recall John’s loyalty and love of his students, his faculty colleagues and the university. He was first and foremost an advocate and champion for his students. Over the years, he was an advisor to many student clubs and recently served as faculty advisor for the new Afro-Centric Food and Culture Club and the JWU Rowing Club.
John’s commitment to JWU was recognized throughout the years in several ways, including numerous awards:
- Outstanding Service Awards—1998, 1999, 2005, 2014
- CFIT MVP Award – 2000
- CFIT Teacher of the Year – 2008
- CFIT “Students’ Choice” Award – 2022
- CFIT Citizenship Award – 2024
A celebration of life will be held to honor John’s legacy and dedication to JWU this fall, when students return to campus. Details will be shared when available.

Very sad to hear the passing of one of my greatest Chef and more importantly, life mentors. Chef John Aukstolis. This man exceeded everything you would think a mentor would be. The culinary world, Johnson & Wales University community, and Providence, RI have lost a big piece. He had helped and touched so many lives. My heart is sad. Thank you for everything Chef. So sad to hear of the passing of a JWU legend. Chef John Aukstolis was a pillar of the Johnson & Wales Culinary program. I remember being terrified to enter that garde manger kitchen because of his reputation.He would throw things and scream when we walked by just to mess with us. Jj Stolis turned out to be one of the kindest, most caring, Chefs I had the pleasure of ever learning from.
