Listeners of WCCO radio mourn the loss of a familiar voice. Jack Farrell, the longstanding owner of Haskell’s Wine and Spirits and a WCCO contributor, has passed away at the age of eighty-two. For over 50 years, Farrell was a regular presence on WCCO, appearing on Saturday mornings with Denny Long and previously on Charlie Boone’s “Weekly Wine Chat” segments.
“He’s been a part of WCCO Radio for so many years, as I have, and I worked with him certainly after Charlie Boone retired,” Long said. “Jack has been part of this Twin Cities’ scene, probably a year or two longer than I’ve been at CCO which is like 53 years.”
Family members reported that Farrell passed away after swimming on Saturday. Haskell’s Wine & Spirits, founded in 1934, was acquired by the Farrell family in 1970.
Jack Farrell was a prominent figure in the Twin Cities, known for his sophisticated style, extensive wine knowledge, and distinctive bow tie. The original Haskell’s was the first to import classic French wines into Minnesota, and Farrell frequently broadcasted from French wine regions such as Champagne and Burgundy.
Haskell’s flagship store, initially located at 7th and Hennepin, is now at 9th and Nicollet. Over the years, Haskell’s has expanded to include 12 locations across Minnesota, with notable stores in Maple Grove, Woodbury, Stillwater, Plymouth, and Excelsior, as well as an online store. Jack Farrell’s four children have all continued his legacy in the alcohol industry.
Jack Farrell’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by his family.
