Former BBC Newsreader Huw Edwards Charged with Indecent Images Offences
Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, 62, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, according to the Metropolitan Police. Edwards resigned from the BBC in April following allegations that he had paid a teenager thousands of pounds for sexually explicit pictures.
Edwards, who was the BBC’s highest-earning newsreader at the time of his resignation, had a 40-year tenure with the corporation. The alleged offences are reported to have occurred between December 2020 and April 2022 and involve images shared via a WhatsApp chat.
Edwards was arrested on 8 November 2023 and formally charged on Wednesday, 26 June. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 31 July.
In the 2023-24 financial year, Edwards was paid between £475,000 and £479,999, making him the third-highest-paid presenter at the BBC.
