A tragic domestic violence incident in Portage, Indiana, on Friday night left two people dead and a young woman seriously injured. According to the Portage Police Department, the violent episode began when 45-year-old Charles Manville fatally shot his wife, 46-year-old Brandy Manville, before injuring their 21-year-old daughter and taking his own life.
Authorities responded to a distress call at 7:41 p.m. from the family’s home on Monument Avenue. The couple’s daughter had dialed 911, reporting that her father was intoxicated, throwing objects, and armed with a firearm. As the call unfolded, both the dispatcher and responding officers heard the sound of gunfire.
Upon entering the home, police discovered Charles Manville deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His wife, Brandy, a beloved secretary at Portage High School, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Their daughter was found alive with life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital by ambulance before being airlifted to a trauma center. She remains in serious but stable condition.
Portage High School released a statement mourning the loss of Brandy Manville, describing her as a compassionate individual who offered kindness and support to students and staff. “Our school community is deeply saddened and impacted by this tragedy,” the statement read. Counseling services will be provided to help students and staff cope with the loss.
Police confirmed that no officers discharged their weapons and that no other individuals were involved in the incident. Authorities believe the shooting was confined to the three family members, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. The daughter has not yet been able to provide a statement, leaving the motive for the tragic events unknown.
