Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving the Duchesne High School basketball team during the State 2A Boys High School tournament hosted at Southern Utah University.
The incident under investigation occurred off-campus during the weekend of the tourney, Cedar City Police Sgt. Tim Bonzo said, in a hotel in town. The tournament ran Feb. 22-25, the allegations reported to police Feb. 27, he said.
Since the investigation is still ongoing and involves juveniles he couldn’t release many details, Bonzo said.
The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is involved and has recently completed its interviews of team members and other parties, he said, and forwarded the results to Cedar City police. Duchesne is some 200 miles northeast of Cedar City.
As is routine in any reports that make it as far as the investigations division, Bonzo said the results of the probe will be forwarded to prosecutors for review, the Cedar City Attorney’s Office if circumstances involved possible misdemeanors or the Iron County Attorney’s Office if they arise to felony level.
The Duchesne County School District has reportedly released a statement saying saying school officials are fully cooperating with the investigation.
