South Bend Community School Corporation Director of Guidance Charan Richards has died. The news of her death has left many heartbroken. She was announced dead through a post that says “We sadly announce the passing of my beautiful mother Charan Richards.” The actual cause of Charan Richards’ death has not been revealed.

Charan Richards graduated from LaSalle High School, a foundational step in her educational journey. Motivated by a desire to help others and make a tangible difference in her community, she went on to earn her degree from Ball State University. During her time at Ball State, Richards honed her skills in social work and counseling, laying the groundwork for a career in education that would span over two decades.

Richards’ career began in August 1992, when she took on the role of School Social Worker at South Bend Community School Corporation. She worked in this capacity for four years, until August 1996, providing invaluable support to students and their families. As a social worker, she was responsible for helping students navigate personal challenges that affected their academic performance and emotional well-being.

Her work included counseling, crisis intervention, and connecting families with resources, all of which had a profound impact on the students and community she served. In August 2000, Richards transitioned into a role with even greater influence, taking on the position of Guidance Director at SBCSC. For the next 13 years, she played a central role in shaping the guidance programs at the district level, advocating for initiatives that supported students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.

Richards’ leadership and expertise did not go unnoticed. In August 2013, she was promoted to Director of Guidance for the South Bend Community School Corporation. This position allowed her to have an even greater impact on the district’s overall guidance strategy. As Director, Richards oversaw the implementation of guidance programs across the entire district, helping to set the vision for student success at every grade level. Her leadership ensured that students received not only academic guidance but also the emotional and social support necessary to thrive in their school environments.

Throughout her tenure at SBCSC, Charan Richards remained deeply committed to the idea that every student, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to the resources and support necessary to achieve success. Her years of service in social work and guidance were characterized by an unwavering focus on helping students feel supported and empowered, both in and out of the classroom.
