The body of a BASE jumper has been recovered from Yavapai Point on the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
A call reporting the incident was received by dispatch on Thursday morning, according to a news release on Friday.
“Park rangers responded and located the body of a deceased male approximately 500 feet below the rim, along with a deployed parachute,” stated the National Park Service.
Recovery teams reached the victim on Friday morning, transporting the body to the rim by helicopter. It was then transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification. No further information is available at this time.
“BASE jumping, a high-risk activity involving parachuting from fixed objects, is prohibited in all areas of Grand Canyon National Park,” the release noted.
