The Iowa Department of Public Safety has identified the victim of the tragic mass shooting at Perry High School as Ahmir Jolliff, an 11-year-old sixth-grade student. Shockingly, the incident resulted in a total of eight victims, two more than initially reported.
Among those wounded were three staff members and four students, all with varying degrees of injuries. Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, who sustained injuries in the shooting, is currently in critical condition. Marburger has been lauded as a hero for his courageous actions to protect students during the chaos. While two students remain hospitalized, the other victims have been treated and released.
The suspected shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responding officers found Butler with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Additionally, an explosive device was discovered within the school premises but was rendered inactive safely.
The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. The Iowa Department of Public Safety is actively reviewing digital and social media evidence, conducting background investigations, and continuing with eyewitness accounts and victim interviews in pursuit of answers and justice.
