Arizona Worker, Tyrone Wilson, Dies in Six-Story Fall at VAI Resort Construction Site

Arizona is mourning the tragic loss of 22-year-old Tyrone Wilson, who died in a fall at a construction site earlier this week. His mother, Latoya Cheney, expressed her deep grief, sharing, “Words can’t describe how I feel right now. I still think he’s at work, but knowing that he’s gone… It’s really tearing me apart and tearing his siblings apart, his dad.” Wilson, an ambitious young man, worked as an ironworker, rodbuster, and carpenter at the VAI Resort construction site near State Farm Stadium. The accident happened early Monday morning, just as his 3 a.m. shift began, with Wilson falling approximately six stories, according to police reports.

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) is currently investigating the incident to determine if any safety violations occurred at the site. Latoya Cheney described her son as hardworking and dedicated, saying, “He chose the hardest job and wanted to be an ironworker. Then he wanted to be a journeyman. He wanted to show us how strong and proud he was to work that hard, tough job.” The VAI Resort, where Wilson worked, is set to be Arizona’s largest resort.

The ADOSH investigation, which could take up to five months, aims to uncover the details of the accident and ensure compliance with safety standards. Fisher Industries, the company managing the project, extended condolences to Wilson’s family. Chief Business Officer Todd Mack stated, “Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the individual involved. At this time, we cannot comment further until we receive the results of the in-progress investigation.”

To honor Wilson and cover funeral expenses, his family has started a GoFundMe campaign. Cheney emphasized the importance of a dignified farewell for her son, saying, “He deserves everything we can give him right now.” The community has shown strong support for the fundraiser, rallying around the family in their time of need.

Wilson’s death highlights the dangers inherent in the construction industry, especially in challenging roles like ironworking. As his family and friends grieve, they hope the investigation will provide clarity and lead to improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies. For now, Wilson’s loved ones are focused on preserving his memory and honoring his drive, strength, and passion for his work. His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by workers in hazardous professions and the critical importance of workplace safety.
