Samuel Hyde Shooting:- A teenage student opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, killing a teacher and another teenage student during the final week before Christmas break. The shooter, who was identified as Samuel Hyde, a student at the school, died from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police reported that the shooting, which began shortly before 11 a.m., left three people dead, including the suspect, and six others injured. Among the injured, two students sustained life-threatening injuries, while four others suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed that officers did not discharge their weapons during the incident, and the school did not have an on-site police resource officer. Speaking at an afternoon press conference, Barnes emphasized that the investigation was ongoing, with police conducting interviews and obtaining search warrants. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but the suspect’s family is cooperating with authorities.
“This was a tragedy that occurred in the middle of a school day, and while we know the physical injuries, there will be emotional wounds that last far longer,” Barnes said. He also noted that officers would avoid rushing to question students immediately, allowing them time to process the traumatic event.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her sorrow over the incident, saying she had hoped such violence would never occur in Madison. She urged those struggling with mental health issues to seek support and emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent gun violence.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers shared his condolences in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community.” He also thanked first responders for their swift action.
Abundant Life Christian School, which serves students from kindergarten through high school, described itself as providing a “quality Christian education” to around 200 families. In a post on its public Facebook page, the school asked for prayers and pledged to provide updates as they become available.
City Church of Madison, located on the same campus as the school, announced that all Monday evening activities had been canceled but that Tuesday night prayers would proceed as scheduled.
Monday’s shooting marks the 82nd school shooting in the United States in 2024, according to a CNN analysis.
