Famous hip hop record producer and Dj Clark Kent has sadly passed away. The news of his passing has left many in shock and disbelief. He was confirmed dead through a Facebook post made on Tuesday that reads “Rip to dj Clark Kent!!!! A real legend wit the beats and a live sneaker head don!!! REST IN PARADISE. The actual cause of his death has not been make public.
He was born Rodolfo Franklin on September 28, 1966. In the late 1980s, DJ Clark Kent made his mark in hip-hop as the DJ for rapper Dana Dane, working behind the scenes to amplify the voice of one of the genre’s rising stars. During this time, he became a staple in Manhattan’s hip-hop club scene, spinning at venues like the one just around the block from Downtown Records on West 26th Street. This spot, a short-lived but iconic hub for hip-hop, saw other legendary DJs like Funkmaster Flex and Kid Capri showcasing their skills, creating an environment where emerging talent thrived.
Clark Kent’s talents as a producer soon gained recognition. In 1989, he produced the remix for Troop’s hit song “Spread My Wings,” a track that helped solidify his place as a force in the music industry. But it was his work with Junior M.A.F.I.A. that truly propelled him into the spotlight. His production of “Player’s Anthem” became his first major street hit, featuring The Notorious B.I.G. and introducing the world to Lil’ Kim, marking her first appearance on a record. The song’s success became a defining moment in Kent’s career, positioning him as one of the top producers in the game.
In the early 1990s, DJ Clark Kent took on a new role within the hip-hop community by becoming the MC for the New Music Seminar, a highly anticipated DJ battle that brought together the best in the business. Renaming it “Clark Kent’s Superman Battle for World Supremacy,” he hosted the event for several years, making it a cornerstone of DJ culture. One of the most memorable moments in this event’s history was the legendary battle between DJ Noize and DJ 8-Ball, which ended in a decisive victory for DJ Noize, leaving 8-Ball in what would become one of the most talked-about upsets in DJ battles.
Beyond music, DJ Clark Kent is a prominent figure in sneaker culture. His love for sneakers has become a well-known part of his persona, with him once claiming to own 3,500 pairs. This passion for footwear led to high-profile collaborations with major brands like Nike, Adidas, and New Balance. In 2010, Nike commissioned him to design the “Nike Five Boroughs AF1 Low” pack, a limited-edition collection of Air Force 1 sneakers that celebrated New York City’s diverse sneaker culture.
