Whitewater Police released the name of the suspect accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old UW-Whitewater student, Kara Welsh.
Officials have arrested 23-year-old Chad T. Richards of Loves Park, Illinois.
Police said they responded to an apartment Friday night, Aug. 30 near Whitewater and Main Street.
An investigation determined an altercation occurred between Welsh and Richards.
The victim was identified by police as Kara Welsh from Plainfield, Illinois. She was majoring in management in the College of Business and Economics and was a member of the Warhawk gymnastics team. She was a two-time all-American who won the DIII vault title in 2023.
Richards is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the Walworth County Courthouse on charges of First-Degree Intentional Homicide, Endangering Safety by the Use of a Dangerous Weapon, and Disorderly Conduct while Armed.
