Matthew Peter obituary, Death cause: The Albany, New York community is mourning the sudden loss of Matthew Peter, a dedicated public servant and community leader who passed away on December 14th, 2023 at the age of 38. Matthew served as a member of the Albany County Legislature representing the 5th District and as Executive Director of the Albany Parking Authority.
During his career, Matthew worked tirelessly to enact positive change in Albany through progressive policies and community-focused programs. His visionary leadership and commitment to public service significantly benefited Albany residents.
Early Life and Education
A native of Albany, Matthew graduated from the University at Albany in 2007 with both a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in international relations and comparative politics. He began his career in public service working under former Governor Eliot Spitzer.
Government and Community Roles
In addition to serving as a County Legislator and leading the Albany Parking Authority, Matthew worked in various roles for both the state and local government. He served as Mayor Kathy Sheehan’s first chief of staff and worked for the state Senate Finance Committee and Department of Taxation.
Outside of his official government positions, Matthew gave back to the community as a board member for numerous local organizations, including FEED Albany, Capitalize Albany, and Park Playhouse. He was also an enthusiastic yearly participant in the Santa Speedo Sprint charity race on Lark Street.
Legislative Accomplishments
During Matthew’s tenure on the Albany County Legislature, he spearheaded the creation of critical programs that have made a major impact, including the county’s ACCORD program. This innovative initiative partners social workers with sheriff’s EMS workers to respond to mental health, addiction, and non-violent 911 calls.
Matthew also worked extensively to address homelessness, substance abuse issues, and mental health crises in Albany’s communities. He pushed for creative solutions and introduced results-driven pilot initiatives to alleviate these systemic challenges.
