According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a small plane crashed in rural Upstate New York on Monday, killing five persons. At about 2:00 PM on Sunday, a private single-engine aircraft crashed in Delaware County, close to Masonville. The FAA claimed that after taking off from Albert S. Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta, the Piper PA-46 aircraft crashed for an unidentified reason.
According to reports, the crash site was discovered on Sunday at 9:31 p.m. following an extensive search with drones, ATVs and helicopters. All five people that were on board the aircraft were found in the wreckage. New York State Police identified the victims as a pilot and four passengers, including two children. The victims were Roger Beggs, age 76, Laura VanEpps, age 43, Ryan VanEpps, age 42, James R. VanEpps, age 12, and Harrison VanEpps, age 10. All from from Roswell, Georgia.
According to the police, the travellers were from Georgia and were in the area for the Cooperstown baseball tournament. The aircraft was on its route to West Virginia for refueling, with Cobbs County International Airport near Atlanta, Georgia serving as the final destination. Examining the event are the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). A potential cause for the collision has not been determined by officials.
Masonville is roughly 25 miles outside of Oneonta and 80 miles southeast of Syracuse in the Southern Tier’s western Catskills mountain region. According to earlier reports, the crash might have happened in the nearby villages of Sidney or Hamlet of Trout Creek.
