State Police are currently investigating a tragic incident involving a fatal crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Bethlehem. The victim has been identified as 36-year-old James Gibson Jr., who was struck and killed while walking in the right lane of the thruway. According to authorities, the incident occurred early on Sunday morning at approximately 1:59 a.m. State police were dispatched to the scene near Exit 23 on I-87 southbound in response to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car.
Upon arrival, they found that Gibson Jr. had been walking in the right lane of traffic when he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and called emergency services for assistance. Despite their prompt response, Gibson Jr. succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. To facilitate the investigation and allow for a thorough collision reconstruction, the right lane of I-87 was closed for about five and a half hours. State police have confirmed that the driver involved in the incident has been fully cooperative with the investigation.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the crash. No further details have been released, and it remains unclear why Gibson Jr. was walking in the lane of traffic at the time of the accident.
