Joe Bucci, a cherished member of the drag racing community in Palmetto, Florida, tragically passed away on February 24th, 2022, at the young age of 38. His sudden death, attributed to cardiac arrest during a racing event, has deeply saddened his friends, family, and fellow racers.
Born in Raymond, New Hampshire, in 1984, Bucci cultivated a passion for cars and racing from a young age. After high school, he began working at local garages and dealerships, refining his skills as a mechanic and fabricator. Seeking warmer weather and greater opportunities, Bucci eventually settled in Palmetto, Florida, where he quickly became an integral part of the grassroots drag racing scene.
Known for his tireless work ethic and willingness to assist others, Bucci earned the nickname “Florida Man” at Forced Performance Turbochargers, where he served as Operations Manager and Coordinator. Outside of work, he devoted much of his time to Project Goodwill Racing, an organization aimed at involving underprivileged youth in motorsports. As crew chief, Bucci mentored young drivers, passing on his mechanical expertise and love for racing.
Tragically, Bucci collapsed while attending a routine racing event and did not regain consciousness despite immediate medical attention. He remained on life support until Monday, allowing loved ones to bid their farewells.
The news of Bucci’s passing sparked an outpouring of grief and support from the racing community. Colleagues and friends remembered him for his genuine kindness and unwavering optimism, which touched the lives of many. His legacy as an engine builder, driver, and mentor will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
In honor of Bucci’s memory, the Palmetto racing community plans to pay tribute to him at an upcoming event, where his final race car will make exhibition passes down the strip. A memorial service will also be held to celebrate his life and legacy.
Though his absence leaves a void in the hearts of many, Bucci’s spirit lives on through the memories he created and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
