Hydeia Broadbent, an American HIV/AIDS activist from Las Vegas, Nevada, has sadly passed away on February 20, 2024. Her life began in 1984 under mysterious circumstances, as she was born with HIV, although it went undiagnosed until 1987 when she was just three years old. Hydeia’s life took a significant turn when she was adopted by Loren and Patricia Broadbent.
Initially facing uncertainty due to her birth mother abandoning her at a hospital, Hydeia’s early years were marked by struggles against HIV-related health complications. Despite medical predictions that she wouldn’t live past the age of five, Hydeia persisted, although she tragically passed away from AIDS at the age of five.
From a young age, Hydeia found her voice and became an advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and education. Her collaboration with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and memorable appearances alongside figures like Magic Johnson propelled her advocacy efforts to national and international stages. In 1994, the Hydeia L. Broadbent Foundation was established to further her cause.
